Description

2018 LOOKOUT Centre Designated Teacher Training (DTT)

The Designated Teacher role helps schools deliver improved education outcomes for students in out-of-home care.

The SWVR LOOKOUT Centre is offering Designated Teacher Training (DTT) to all schools in the South Western Victoria Region in Term 2, 2018.

The Designated Teacher role will ensure all schools fulfil their responsibility to deliver improved educational outcomes for our students in out-of-home care.

Many students in out-of-home care suffer disrupted learning and may miss extended periods of school. The gaps in their learning, and in many cases, the emotional impact of their experiences, are likely to present significant challenges to their education. The complexity of this fragmented educational experience requires careful assessment and specific planning needs.

Designated Teacher Training will ensure that all principals feel confident that their schools are engaging in excellent practice in supporting students in out-of-home care. Training Designated Teachers in every school will ensure that effective practice becomes universal.

What do Designated Teachers do?

The Designated Teacher will:

  • promote a school culture of high expectations and aspirations for students in out-of-home care
  • ensure the student has a voice in setting learning targets
  • be a source of advice for staff about differentiated teaching strategies appropriate for individual students
  • ensure all Koorie students have a Cultural Support Plan and are linked with the Koorie Education Support Officer
    • ensure that students in out-of-home care are prioritised in one-to-one tuition arrangements
    • ensure carers understand the importance of supporting learning at home
    • have lead responsibility to ensure each student in out-of-home care has a quality IEP
    • ensure referrals are made to additional learning assessments when required (e.g. speech pathology)
    • ensure implementation of all elements of the Partnering Agreement
    • be a key school contact for LOOKOUT Advisors, DHHS and other agencies.
