Description

Design on show: decolonising design education

The library is putting design on show with a series of monthly talks featuring design experts from the City of Sydney area. This month, we’re in conversation about colonial curricula and how a shortsighted description of design can limit and weaken our potential.

University of Technology lecturers and big picture thinkers, Danièle Hromek and Alexandra Crosby, are both working on broadening the definition of design. To diversify, they set out to decolonise design education. Using Wareamah (Cockatoo Island) as a place to ponder, they dissect the connection between mapping, place, displacement and creativity via dialogues between Indigenous and non-Indigenous designers.

Danièle Hromek

By blending design elements with installations and sculptural form, this spatial designer contemplates contemporary urban Aboriginality and the Indigenous experience of Country. Daniele looks at how Indigenous people utilise, interpret, and experience their space and how the trauma of colonisation is revisited by our current exclusive design culture. As a proud Saltwater woman, she explores re-Indigenising space through retranslating and reclaiming the Aboriginal dreaming of space and explores how we can sustain this culture in our built environments.

Dr Alexandra Crosby

Director of Interdisciplinary Design at UTS, Dr Crosby covers Design Thinking, Design Futures, and social innovation. In 2013, she was awarded a Doctorate for her thesis on local forms of environmental activism in Indonesia. She is a founding member of Frontyard Projects, a community futuring space in Marrickville as well as holding a directorship of Inside Indonesia.
