Event description

Description

Derrick McManus has an unbreakable link to the Barossa Valley. He was a member of the elite South Australia Police Special Tasks and Rescue Group; a sniper, special ops diver and counter-terrorist operative. He was exceptionally fit and operating at his peak day in and day out. He was a ‘peak performer’ in every sense.

On the 5th of May 1994, Derrick’s life changed. That was the day he was sent as part of a team to execute an arrest warrant just outside of Nuriootpa. It was a high risk job and everyone was on high alert, but what happened next was unexpected. Derrick was shot 14 times in less than five seconds and his entire world was turned upside down. He lay on the ground bleeding for three hours before he could be rescued and in a 2016 interview with ABC Radio, Derrick said “I had to accept the present and deal with the present if I had any chance of survival.”

Derrick has embraced that philosophy and now travels the world speaking to people about resilience and durability of human performance. He has built a solid reputation as a keynote speaker at numerous conferences and workshops. Now he’s coming to the Light Region as part of Adult Learners’ Week and will be talking about how to be the best you can possibly be, given your current circumstances. Derrick will use his incredible story of survival and durability as a way to encourage you to grow and learn; to continually improve and learn new skills.

Light Regional Council Library Service is proud to be associated with Derrick and present this FREE five hour workshop that also includes lunch as well as a “meet and greet” morning tea.

You’ll not only hear Derrick’s inspirational story in his own words, you’ll also take part in numerous activities designed to help you understand your own strengths and weaknesses; to understand that learning is a lifelong process; and that learning doesn’t always mean sitting in a classroom taking notes. The aim of the workshop is to guide you to becoming the best you can be in your own individual circumstances; to come away with new knowledge and a desire to continue learning in ways you hadn’t even thought of.
