About this Event

Elected in 2012 and 2016 as the Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Councillor Arron Wood chairs the Finance and Governance portfolio and is Council representative on the following committees and bodies:

  • Audit and Risk Committee
  • Committee for Melbourne
  • Melbourne Art Trust
  • Victorian Local Governance Association

In addition to being the Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Councillor Wood is also the founder and principal of the highly acclaimed Kids Teaching Kids Program which is an award winning environmental education program that promotes positive wellbeing, resilience and awareness in young people in matters of local and global issues.

Councillor Wood graduated with a degree in Forest Science from Melbourne University and is a respected sustainability and environmental leader. He is currently serving on the Board of the South East Water Corporation and is Chair of the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute.

Councillor Wood’s most notable achievements over the years include:

  • Selected to be part of Al Gore’s Climate Change Leadership Program
  • Winner of the United Nations Individual Award for Outstanding Service to the Environment
  • 2001 Young Australian of the Year
  • Completed a Churchill Fellowship which took him to New York and Geneva working with the United Nations to research replication of environmental education programs on a global scale

In April 2019, Councillor Wood participated in the SBS docu-series Filthy Rich and Homeless where he left the comfort of his home to spend 10 days sleeping rough of the streets of Sydney and experience the homelessness crisis firsthand.

Councillor Wood’s most recent achievement was being appointed a member of the Order of Australia (AM), for his service to local government, the environment and his local community.
