Event description

Description

The La Trobe University Confucius Institute’s exhibition Deng Zi: Contemporary Ceramic Art from China, will be on display at La Trobe Bundoora, and is the first exhibition of Dengzi’s work outside China.

In this special event, Deng Zi will present a traditional tea ceremony, and discuss his artistic practice through a translator.

Deng Zi is young, but among only a few contemporary Chinese ceramicists able to seamlessly merge modern elements of design, techniques and materials with ancient traditions and maintain the unique Chinese aesthetic. He is influenced by Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.

Integrating features of literati ink wash painting in the Song Dynasty with ceramic painting, Dengzi’s artworks are designed to embellish living spaces and share the aesthetic of Chinese everyday life with all. The exhibition offers new opportunities for cultural exchange through art.

Dengzi studied at Jiangxi Ceramic and Art Institute, and Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute. He has exhibited regularly in China, including in Beijing, and has been instrumental in promoting ceramic design in Foshan, Guangdong Province, China – a region traditionally associated with ceramic production. In 2016 Dengzi established the Wowen Art Gallery in Songtang Village, Foshan.

Deng Zi: Contemporary Ceramic Art from China, will be on display at La Trobe Bundoora from Tuesday 18 - Friday 21 July. The exhibition is presented by the La Trobe University Confucius Institute with support from La Trobe Art Institute.
