DAM 2016 signature lecture:

Alzheimer’s Australia NSW is pleased to announce the Dementia Awareness Month 2016 Signature Lecture featuring international dementia expert, Dr Ron Petersen. Dr Petersen is a world leader in the field of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. He is Director of the Mayo Clinic in the U.S. and was also Ronald Reagan’s personal physician and treated the former President of America’s Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr Petersen will present the latest research about mild cognitive impairment, and its possible progression to dementia, as well as the need for a national dementia strategy for Australia.

Dr Petersen will discuss:

  • Latest insights and research findings about mild cognitive impairment and dementia

  • The US and global experiences in establishing a national dementia strategy

Bio: Ronald C. Petersen, M.D., Ph.D.

Ronald C. Petersen, M.D., Ph.D., directs the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging, both of which involve the study and characterization of aging individuals over time with an emphasis on neuroimaging and biomarkers.

Dr. Petersen focuses on investigations of cognition in normal aging, mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Dr. Petersen and his colleagues evaluate cognitive changes in normal aging as well as in a variety of disorders involving impairment in cognition, such as Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal lobar degeneration and Lewy body dementia.

In 2011, he was appointed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve as the chair of the Advisory Committee on Research, Care, and Services for the National Alzheimer’s Project Act and was appointed to the World Dementia Council in 2014 by UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

In 2012, Dr. Petersen was chair of the Advisory Council on Alzheimer's Research, Care, and Services, which was charged with developing a plan called for in the National Alzheimer's Project Act (NAPA), which President Obama signed into law in January 2011.
