Meta-analysis in Health and Medicine

Presenters: Tom Stanley, Professor of Meta-Analysis, Faculty of Business and Law, and Emily Kothe, School of Psychology, Faculty of Health.

The Deakin Laboratory for the Meta-Analyisis of Research (DeLMAR) is hosting this workshop on the use of meta-analysis within the context of health and medicine.

A unifying focus of DeLMAR's work is the development and application of meta-analytic methods to research questions problems in the social and natural sciences. Tom Stanley, Professor of Meta-Analysis in the Faculty of Business and Law, and Emily Kothe, School of Psychology, will discuss how meta-analytic methods can be applied in a health context.

The session will include discussion of the conceptual basis of fixed and random effects meta-analysis and examples of research conducted by DeLMAR researchers from within psychology, behavioural medicine, psychiatry, and health economics.

Presenters

Dr Emily Kothe is the Co-Director of DeLMAR and the Stream Leader for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis in the School of Psychology Data Sciences Unit. She has conducted systematic reviews and meta-analyses across a number of topics within psychology including: attachment, cognitive dissonance, health behaviour and behaviour change, and body image.


Tom Stanley is Professor of Meta-Analysis in the Faculty of Business and Law. He joined the Hendrix Faculty in 1986 and earned his Ph.D. from Purdue University. He specializes in meta-analysis and had developed statistical methods for meta-regression analysis and for detecting and correcting publication selection bias. Dr. Stanley is the convener of MAER-Net.
