Event description

Description

Enjoy a glass of wine and antipasto at the National Press Club with former SBS TV Bureau Chief and Chief Political Correspondent Catherine McGrath in this Q&A-style event as she moderates a panel of ANU experts who will share their expert views and opinions on the major events which defined 2018 and how these continue to shape and impact the world.

The panel will cover issues from the drought, political instability, international security, trade wars, cyber security and academic freedom.

PANEL SPEAKERS:

Dr Jacqui Hoepner focuses on research silencing in contested fields and its implications for academic freedom. Her work draws upon anthropology, critical public health, cognitive psychology, policy and science communication to explore why some lines of enquiry are deemed unacceptable.

Professor David Lindenmayer AO is an ARC Laureate Fellow at The Fenner School of Environment and Society. He is a global expert in forest and woodland ecology and management as well as conservation biology and biodiversity management. He has published 46 books and 1160 scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals and received numerous international and international awards for his research.

Dr Jill Sheppard studies public opinion, political participation, and Australian politics. She works on Australia's biggest surveys of political and social attitudes. Her recent work is concerned with declining public support for Australia's political system and how Australians vote.

Professor Rory Medcalf is Head of the National Security College and recognised as one of Australia's leading strategic analysts and a thought leader on the concept of the Indo-Pacific. His 30-year career spans diplomacy, intelligence, academia, think tanks and journalism.

Dr Lesley Seebeck is the CEO of the ANU Cyber Institute with an outstanding record of strategic planning and delivery within complex and multidisciplinary environments spanning government, industry and academia.

Dr Andrew Stoeckel is a Visiting Fellow at the ANU Centre for Applied Macroeconomic Analysis. Besides analysing the impact of global macroeconomic events on Australia, he has specialised on assessing the potential impact of trade wars on the world's economies and what the best remedies might be. He has published widely on these subjects.

This will be an interactive, live event and questions from the audience are encouraged. Please submit your question when you register for this event on Eventbrite.

Antipasto platters and a glass of wine will be provided from 6.30pm. The event will start from 7pm.
