The journey to a new life for a child infested with jiggers in Eastern Uganda begins with you, a pair of scissors and friends.
A jigger is a sand flea that burrows into the bottom of a person's feet and quickly multiplies by laying hundreds of eggs in the soft tissue. When infestation goes untreated, it can lead to serious health issues, including gangrene, amputation and life-threatening infections. Additionally, the physical pain of jiggers can become so intense that a child cannot run and play. There is also a social stigma as many people believe the issue is related to witchcraft and curses.
Sole Hope removes jiggers from about 400 children's feet each week. As part of that process, Sole Hope educates children and caretakes on how to stay jigger free and gives them new shoes made out of 98 percent recycled materials - namely old, cut-up jeans.
AromaDay Bundaberg will host a Shoe Cutting Party on the 2nd Friday in December from 10am-12noon. Grab your old jeans, fabric scissors and a few friends and come party with a purpose to make a difference in the life of a child.
If you can't attend this event, you can still participate by donating your old jeans. A collection tub is located in the foyer of Bundaberg Broadcasters.
