Description

Flinders Life Narrative Research Group and the Matthew Flinders Fellowship in History are pleased to host this public lecture.

Deborah Bird Rose "Fidelity Across Encounters"

Abstract: Step by fateful step, to enter into the presence of, and seek to re-present, the lives of others, be they human or nonhuman, is to enter a domain already enmeshed in ethical challenges. Cross-cultural and inter-species encounters emerge out of numerous desires, and are situated, almost invariably, in histories of violence. I will explore some questions of voice in such vibrant and conflicted fields. Fidelity arises from the ethical condition of being claimed, and inspires us to remain radically open both to others and to the future.

Biography: Deborah Bird Rose came to Australia in 1980 to live with Aboriginal people in the hopes of learning about their relationships with country and other species. Instead of going home to the USA, she stayed to work with people on land claims and other decolonising projects. Her continuing commitment to social and ecological justice focuses on multispecies communities in this time of escalating violence and amidst the peril of extinction. She is a prize-winning author, and with Thom van Dooren she founded the international journal Environmental Humanities. She serves on numerous editorial boards, including the recently founded Ecological Citizen, and is an Adjunct Professor in

Environmental Humanities at UNSW. Her most recent books are Extinction Studies: Stories of Time, Death and Generations, co-edited with Thom van Dooren and Matthew Chrulew (2017), Manifesto for Living in the Anthropocene, co-edited with Katherine Gibson and Ruth Fincher (2015), and Wild Dog Dreaming: Love and Extinction (2011).
