Teaching Skills to People with an Intellectual Disability 

1 Day

This one-day introductory course is for people interested in developing the skills of individuals with intellectual disability. This course aligns well with the essential skills development component of the Centre’s Writing Positive Behaviour Plans course. Skill development theory covered in this course includes identifying key steps in teaching a skill, writing skill objectives and task analyses, understanding cues, prompts and reinforcement and creating a skill development plan. 

Target audience 

  • Direct support staff
  • Developers of positive behaviour support plans
  • Teams implementing positive behaviour supports 

Learning objectives 

After completing this training, participants should be able to: 

  • Identify the key steps in developing a skills teaching plan
  • Clearly communicate how to teach individuals with intellectual disability new skills
  • Complete a skills development plan
     
     

Instructions 

What is your experience with the following: 

Scale 1 = nil, 2 = minimal, 3 = regular use 

Identifying key steps in teaching a skill 

Writing skill objectives 

Writing simple task analysis 

Describing cues and prompts 

Selecting and using reinforcement 

Recording and evaluating skill development
