One day Introduction to Positive Behaviour Support

PBS 101: Course Overview

This course provides participants with an introduction and general understanding of the Positive Behaviour Support framework and, is a prerequisite for our 5 day course Writing Positive Behaviour Support Plans (previously Functional Assessment and Positive Behaviour Intervention/FAPBI training).

Participants will gain insight into Positive Behaviour Support, specifically the definitions, the history and its aims. Participants will explore the process of a functional behaviour assessment and how the proactive and preventative strategies should link to the functional behaviour assessment.

Participants will be provided with information on plan implementation and brief information on restrictive practices and their use in Queensland.

Target audience

  • Anyone in the disability sector seeking introductory information on positive behaviour support
  • Disability sector staff who intend to register for Writing Positive Behaviour Support Plan training (and do not have any previous formal PBS training)
  • Direct support teams

Learning objectives

After completing this training, participants should be able to:

  • Clearly identify the aims of positive behaviour support
  • Have a brief understanding of what is involved in a functional behaviour assessment and functions of behaviour
  • Support plan writers by collecting behavioural data to inform decision making
  • Work within a positive behaviour support framework
  • Understand what types of strategies should be in a plan
  • Have some understanding about what affects and supports the implementation of a positive behaviour support plan
