Event description

Description

Go behind the scenes of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute!

Discovery tours provide a unique opportunity for the community to get in contact with biomedical research:

  • See our state-of-the-art research facilities

  • Learn about some of our most exciting discoveries

  • Meet our scientists

  • Hear how our research is shaping future treatments

The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute is Australia’s oldest medical research institute with more than a century of enriching society by improving health outcomes through discovery, translation and education. The Institute boasts a long history of significant medical discoveries, including the 1960 Nobel Prize-winning “discovery of acquired immunological tolerance” by former director Sir Frank MacFarlane Burnet. We are home to over 800 scientists who are all working to understand, treat and prevent diseases such as cancers of the blood, breast, ovary and lung; chronic inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, coeliac disease and type 1 diabetes; and infectious diseases such as malaria, hepatitis and HIV, through basic and translational research. To learn more about the Institute, visit http://www.wehi.edu.au/

Tours are free and run for approximately 90 minutes. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time.

As tour groups visit a working laboratory, closed toe shoes must be worn for occupational health and safety reasons. The minimum age for discovery tour attendees is 12 years old. This event is wheelchair accessible.

For more information, contact Ms Jessica Tempany via tempany.j@wehi.edu.au
