Event description

Description

Judy Johnson introduces the Hunter Writers Centre live reading session.

It is not commonly known that eleven African American convicts arrived in Australia on the First Fleet in 1788. Award-winning author, Judy Johnson, has not one but two of these African American convicts as her ancestors. In an extensively researched collection of poems, based on documents and personal accounts which still exits from that time, Judy vividly shares stories of her ancestors lives, both before transportation and afterwards, in the young colony of New South Wales.

Judy Johnson lives in Lake Macquarie and has been writing poetry and more recently fiction for over twenty years.
She enjoys discovering little known but quirky aspects of Australian history, and bringing life to characters from other times and places.
