Topic: Successful Analytics Implementation in a K-12 School System

With the growth in the use of information systems in schools and school systems, there has been significant increase in the volume and variety of data that is captured, stored and harnessed to improve student learning and school effectiveness. Most school systems are in a nascent stage in implementing analytic initiatives to create more value for students, parents and the broader community.

This presentation covers a new analytics framework developed and successfully implemented by CEO, Parramatta – using a six lens approach solely focussed on school education systems. The dashboards and visualisations created as examples using the framework serve as a practical guide for schools embarking on major analytics initiatives. The presentation will include live demonstration of the analytics portal which would be of interest to school leaders, teachers and school support staff.

Examples in the live Tableau based demonstration will include improvements made by schools and students achieved by using attendance dashboards, school based assessment vs standardised testing, enrolment and catchment analysis, intervention programs such as Reading Recovery, student geo mapping and location intelligence.

The next phase of the Analytics journey will involve model development and predictive analytics using techniques such as linear and logistic regression, clustering and decision trees with variables in performance, behaviour and community data of schools and students.

Speaker: Raju Varanasi

Raju Varanasi is the Chief Information Officer at Catholic Education Office, Parramatta with responsibilities that include enterprise systems, IT infrastructure, data and information services, enterprise service desk, and change management. Raju has over 25 years of experience in the Australian education system, with experience in both government and non-government sectors in Australia. Prior to this role, Raju was the Chief Operating Officer for Education Services Australia where he led the national online services initiative, an integrated suite of digital platforms in content, collaboration, assessment, careers and publishing to meet the needs of teachers, students and parents to support the implementation of national curriculum. Raju also served as General Manager of the first ever innovation centre for public schools and TAFE in NSW Department of Education, which he led successfully for 8 years. Raju has also presented at major conferences organised by UNESCO, Google, Adobe, Intel and EduTech.

Raju is the architect of the highly successful Educational Analytics Framework and Strategy which was implemented in the Catholic Education Office, Parramatta, in 2016. Using a six-lens approach to school effectiveness, Raju and his team developed over 400 visually appealing and user friendly dashboards that blended data in real-time from a range of source systems. This has led to a new wave of data and insights culture across 5000 staff in the 80 schools in the system. Based on capacity building and a self-service mindset, the analytics strategy is underpinned by a solution powered by Alteryx and Tableau. Multiple K-12 schooling measures such as attendance, performance in standardised tests, school based assessment, extra-curricular activities, ethnicity, gender, religion and socio economic status are visualised across scholastic and calendar years to generate deep insights on students and schools.

Raju is a Chemical Engineer with Master’s qualification in Business Administration, and an Australian Fulbright Scholar.
