Event description
DALA is thrilled to invite you to our inaugural virtual networking evening with guest speaker Alastair McEwin AM

About this event

Please join us for our first online networking event for disabled lawyers and law students, sponsored by Gilbert +Tobin.

Event image: large bold black text set against a yellow background says "Virtual Networking Event for Disabled Lawyers". Below this there is an image of Alastair McEwin AO and text to the right of this image says "With Guest Speaker Alastair McEwin AM".

The Disabled Australian Lawyers Association (DALA) was founded in March 2021 by Natalie Wade, Ella Alexander and Abbey Dalton to build a support network for lawyers and law students with disabilities and collectively advocate for greater representation and inclusion of disabled people in the legal profession.

This event is designed to bring together disabled lawyers and law students from around the country to connect and share our lived experiences, career successes and ambitions.

We will kick off the evening with esteemed guest speaker Alastair McEwin AM who will give some opening remarks about his experiences as a disabled lawyer and leader in the disability community. Alastair is currently a Commissioner at the Disability Royal Commission and previously served as Australia's Disability Discrimination Commissioner, Executive Director or Community Legal Centres NSW, CEO of People with Disability Australia, Manager of the Australian Centre for Disability Law and President of the Deaf Society of NSW.

We will then move to a guided group discussion on the following topics:

1. Disclosure and seeking adjustments

2. Safe workplaces - managing microaggressions

3. Disability pride in the legal profession

Depending on numbers, we may break into smaller groups for the group discussions.

The event will be captioned and a transcript will be made available. Please let us know your accessibility needs in the relevant field in your Registration. If you would like to discuss your accessibility needs in more detail, please don't hesitate to contact us at dala.contactus@gmail.com.
