Description

This 5 hour practical program is suitable for ‘lapsed’ riders and those keen to develop bike control and traffic riding skills. It includes bike set-up and safety checks. Participants will gain experience riding on the road in a small group, on local roads with and without marked bicycle lanes. The course promotes safe and responsible bike riding. The initial session will take place in a traffic-free area for the bike control skills session and is followed by a group ride on local roads with and without marked bicycle lanes.

Part 1: Bike control skills & confidence building (traffic-free):

  • Helmets, clothing, footwear & bike safety checks
  • Bike set-up
  • Manoeuvering, mounting and dismounting the bike
  • Starting off smoothly
  • Braking technique
  • How gears work
  • Straight line riding
  • U turns and cornering
  • Scanning
  • Signalling
  • Emergency stopping

Part 2: Confidence & safety on the road (on-road):

  • Rights, responsibilities & road rules
  • Riding on shared paths
  • Correct positioning on roads with and without bicycle lanes
  • Approach to and positioning at intersections
  • Going straight, turning left and turning right at intersections
  • Single lane-roundabouts
  • Hook turn to turn right
  • Sharing the roads with heavy vehicles/buses/trams
  • Riding in single file or 2 abreast
  • Crossing train and tram tracks

IMPORTANT: Please bring your own packed lunch, roadworthy bike, helmet and water!
