Cycle Skills - Beginner

This class is designed for people who can pedal a bike and would like to improve their confidence and skills to enable them to ride more often on cycle paths and quiet streets. It’s suitable for beginners and people getting back on a bike after a few years off. This class covers basic bike safety principles and bike handling skills in a traffic-free environment. Participants must be 18 years of age or over.
The session will cover:
Basic bike adjustment and bike safety checks
Bike safety principles
Bike handling skills, including starting, stopping, cornering, one handed riding for signalling, slow riding and manoeuvring.
Participants need to bring:
a mechanically sound bicycle fitted with a bell – loan bikes can be provided by prior arrangement
an Australian Standards approved helmet
bright clothing suitable for relaxed cycling and non-slip covered shoes
appropriate sun protection
a water bottle
Who can attend?
Courses are aimed at people 18 years of age or over. Some classes may be designated for women only.
Do I need my own bike?
Participants should bring their own, properly working bike, to the workshops. However, a bike may be provided if requested.
What if it rains on the day?
Unless the forecast is particularly bad, workshops will proceed. If the course has to be cancelled due to weather or for any other reason, you will be contacted on the day of the event, so please ensure that you provide a mobile number on which you can be contacted when you book.
What if courses are booked out?
Council will maintain a waiting list, so please contact Natalie McCabe on the email provided should you wish to participate in a future class.
Who will run the courses?
Council is engaging several accredited service providers to run the cycle skills courses.
