Abstract:

Protect yourself now – Essential strategies for securing your digital world

Digital threats such as scams, phishing, and malware have become widespread and pose serious threats to organisations and individuals. This talk provides a practical introduction to personal cyber security starting with the fundamental principles of cyber security and examining the different strategies attackers use to bypass them. Building on this foundation, we explain effective personal defence strategies, including password management, multi-factor authentication, software updates, protection against scams/phishing, and data backups. We provide practical advice to help individuals recognize and effectively respond to cyber risks, protect their privacy, and maintain security both online and offline.

Dr Sebastian Zander is a Senior Lecturer at Murdoch University. Previously, he worked as a Research Fellow at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia and as a Scientist at Fraunhofer FOKUS in Germany. He received his PhD in Telecommunications Engineering from Swinburne University of Technology in 2010. From 2018 to 2019, he was a Senior Software Engineer at Netflix. Sebastian's research areas are cybersecurity and networking, including IoT security, covert channels, network traffic classification, congestion control, and IPv6. Sebastian co-authored the Wiley book “Information Hiding in Communication Networks”, over 50 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, and two IETF RFCs.

The evening will include a seated lecture, with standing refreshments served before the event.
