Event description

Want to cut your carbon footprint and help the environment but don’t know where to start?

Can’t tell your drawdown from your offset?

We make it easy for you by breaking down the big issues around climate change and carbon emissions into easily digestible, bite-sized chunks so you can understand enough to act.

At the Carbon Footprint Workshop on Saturday, 29 July, you’ll get a clear overview of what causes carbon emissions and climate change, the environmental impact and social cost, as well as insights into how individuals, governments and business are working to fix the problem (or not). You’ll even get your hands dirty working on a small eco-project. By the end of the day you’ll have created your own personal, practical plan to measure and reduce your individual carbon footprint. Go you!

We’ve even teamed up with cool places like Stanford Uni so you can see how your carbon footprint measures up against other people around the world.

At the Carbon Footprint Hackathon on Saturday, 5 August, you get to think laterally and come up with ideas to tackle climate change and carbon emissions. It’s a no-holds-barred innovation challenge with a human-centred design thinking approach - you’ll work in teams to come up with creative ideas that you pitch to a panel of innovators ... the best one wins a prize!

Up to the minute, live case studies of the creative ways people around the world are tackling climate change will help get your creative juices flowing.

Together, the Workshop and Hackathon make up the Carbon Footprint Think Lab. They are designed to be taken together but you can sign up for just one session if you want.

Who is it for?

You don't need any background in science or the environment - this event is designed for anyone who would like to understand more and do their bit to help, and for everyone to learn together.

Come on your own or bring your own team.

Who is running it?

Ailsa Lamont from Pomegranate Global. She is definitely not a climate expert, but she is someone who has sifted through tonnes of information so you don’t have to. She also has heaps of experience working in international education and social innovation, and is pretty good at making connections between interesting concepts so you’ll probably learn some useful stuff, be mentally challenged and have some fun.

What you get out of it

Workshop: enough knowledge to empower you to take some action to help the environment, and to create your individual carbon footprint reduction plan.

Hackathon: the chance to practise your creative problem-solving skills by working on the biggest challenge of our age, to work in a team, and prepare and deliver a pitch (all great skills that employers love by the way, so it’s especially useful for students who also get a 20% discount!).

Think Lab (Workshop + Hackathon): all the above, plus a great chance to meet other curious, interested and fabulous people who want to make a positive difference. All Think Lab participants will get an information kit with links to explanatory videos, articles and great research so you can take a deeper dive into the topic in your own time.

What to bring

Catering is not included but the venue does have a kitchen facility (no microwave) if you want to bring your own lunch, otherwise there are heaps of cafes nearby.

What to wear

Whatever you want but remember at the workshop you might be getting your hands dirty.
