Event description
Join us to hear Peter Kennedy, esteemed journalist, political reporter and author present on Curtin’s early work as a newspaper editor.

About this Event

Join guest speaker Peter Kennedy, esteemed journalist, political reporter and author at our annual Curtin Family Home Lecture for 2020.

John Curtin served as the 14th Prime Minister of Australia from 1941, leading the country for the majority of World War II. Before this time, in 1917, John Curtin moved to Perth and took on the job of editor of the Westralian Worker, the official trade union newspaper and was later elected state president of the Australian Journalists Association.

Curtin’s formative years were times of great social change and political upheaval, and today we face the same with the 2020 bushfire crisis and now the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout this, we have experienced massive changes to media and have seen a decline in regional newspapers, the aggregation of various media channels and the proliferation of digital channels.

Peter Kennedy will look at Curtin's work as editor of the Westralian Worker, the acquaintances he made in Perth as editor his impact on the Australian Journalists Association and how he interacted with journalists as Prime Minister.

Then comes the pressures on political reporters with the 24 hour news cycle, interaction with political leaders, the impact of social media and the tougher financial environment for traditional media with the collapse of the long established business model.

How would Curtin have dealt with these challenges? Peter Kennedy will explain.

Please arrive at 5:45pm for a 6:00pm start. Refreshments will be served after the lecture.

If you have any access requirements that we should be aware of, please let us know during the registration process or get in touch with National Trust of Western Australia via phone (08) 9321 6088 or email events@ntwa.com.au
