Event description

Description

City of Sydney Library joins forces with Inspiring Australia to investigate some cutting-edge research. Over three seasons in 2017, we’re lifting the lid on three big-impact topics: food, obesity and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills.

Experts lead a talk and Q&A discussing innovative solutions to the deadly threat of obesity. As the biggest health risk in Australia, a staggering 1 in 4 children and more than 63% of adults are overweight, compared with just over half in 1995.

Getting fatter as we grow older, weight gain is putting us at risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal conditions and some cancers.

Exercise and obesity
As rates of obesity continue to rise, it’s important to know exactly how much – and when – we should exercise as well as what role exercise plays in weight management. Personal trainer, Veronica Smith, gives us insight into why some people are motivated to exercise while others aren’t.

Preventing obesity in children
Obesity begins early in life. Evidence suggests excess weight gained in the first year can stay with a baby into adulthood. Researcher Elizabeth Denney-Wilson has trialled a smartphone app supporting parents of new babies in preventing obesity from the onset.

Meet the researchers

Veronica Smith
With 8 years of experience in personal and group fitness training, she’s currently studying a Bachelor of Psychology at UNSW. To gain insight into the various mechanisms that contribute to obesity, Veronica investigates what motivates people to engage in health-promoting behaviours.

Dr Elizabeth Denney-Wilson
Through her PhD involving a group of 500 teenagers, Elizabeth uncovered that obese teenagers, boys in particular, were likely to demonstrate the same risk factors usually seen in overweight adults. Now, her research is focused on prevention of and management for obesity in young children.

Suitable for a youth and adult audience, this is a free event, so bookings are essential.

Ultimo Library is wheelchair friendly with an accessible toilet.
