Event description

Description

Join us for an exclusive evening with fashion historian, Margot Riley, Curator, Research and Discovery. With the focus on fashion in the State Library's ‘Paintings in the Collection’ exhibition (opening on 6th October), come along and find out which portraits have made it onto the Library’s Best Dressed list.

Images offer many clues about past lives, if you know what to look for. Portraits are one of our most important sources of information about how Australians have looked and dressed over time. What people choose to wear to have their portrait taken can be influenced by many factors; the social position and circumstances of the sitter, or the event for which it was commissioned, can lead to very specific fashion choices.

Includes refreshments. Booking essential.
