Event description
Join one of our free, special curator talks and learn about Sir Samuel Griffith's life through the original objects in our exhibition.

About this event

Sir Samuel Walker Griffith’s enormous influence on the legal and political systems of Queensland and Australia still reverberates 100 years after his death.

Griffith was a well-respected lawyer, twice Premier of Queensland, compiler of the Queensland Criminal Code, editor-in-chief of the Constitution and the first Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. He was also the first Australian translator of Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s famous works, and a passionate patron of the arts and education.

In 2021 we are holding a series of special curator talks about our exhibition, The many hats of Sir Samuel Griffith. Focusing on particular original items displayed in the exhibition, our Curator talks will help to illuminate events in Griffith’s life and career and shed light on his fascinating personality.

Curator talk dates

  • Thursday 4 March 2021 (Privy Counsellor uniform)
  • Thursday 6 May 2021 (Dante translations)
  • Thursday 1 July 2021 (Draft criminal code)
  • Thursday 2 September 2021 (University medals)
  • Thursday 4 November 2021 (Letter from Henry Parkes inviting Griffith to the Federal Convention)

We are also holding some exhibition tours during 2021. Come up close to original items used by Griffith and listen to some of the fascinating stories from Griffith’s personal and professional life.
