Event description

Description

A provocation for the curious, Culture Up Late turns the museum inside out. With VR experiences, short and sweet tours, hands-on workshops, live music and performances, enjoy a mid-week diversion with a bit of a difference. It’s also the perfect opportunity to enjoy the latest exhibitions, during its quieter moments, wandering about with a glass of wine in hand.

MAR 7: OCEANIA CONNECTIONS

Join us as we bring the museum’s Pacifica collections to life through storytelling, creative arts, performance and sharing of knowledge with:

• Cultural Dancer: Poemoana Teriinohorai

Be enthralled by one of Tahiti’s premier dancer / choreographer, ‘Poemoana Terrinohorai’ as she performs the Tahitian Ōte’a (fast drum dance) and ‘Aparima (slow dance).

• 200 Treasures exhibition: Featuring Captain Cook's Hawaiian ‘Ahu‘ula

See the ‘kipuka’ or feathered cape that was given to Captain Cook on his third – and fatal – Pacific voyage by Ali’i (chief) Kalani’opu’u, as an official welcome to Hawaii in December 1778 or January 1779. The exhibition also features significant cultural artefacts from West Papua, Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands, Marshall Islands, Aotearoa and Samoa.

• Cultural Dance group: Matavai Pacific Cultural Arts

The award-winning Sydney-based performing arts group takes us on a journey through the Pacific with dances from Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Cook Islands and Aotearoa.

• Music: DJ Teezy featuring Pacifica vocalists Abel Kingi (DTP), MC Trey and guests.

Grab a drink or a snack at the Atrium pop-up bar with the Pacifica sounds of DJ Teezy and Maori vocalist, Abel Kingi (DTP), Fijian hip-hop soul artist MC Trey and guests as they share some Pacifica classics and their own original music.

• Gallery Tour: Pacific Spirit

Tour the ‘Pacific Spirit’ gallery, exhibiting a selection of rare artefacts including, sacred Malagan masks from Papua New Guinea dating from the 1800s; ceremonial poles from New Ireland; intricately carved door panels from New Zealand; Bird of Paradise head ornaments from the highlands of Papua New Guinea; Kava bowls and drums from Samoa; towering slit drums from Vanuatu; and jewelry from Fiji.

• Touch Tables: Up close with collections

Australian Museum’s knowledgeable volunteers open our collections to you in these intimate, personal and tactile interactions. Touch as much as you want, ask all the questions you can think of, learn something new!

• Adorned: Learn to make your own jewellery.

Create your very own First nations-inspired jewellery with natural materials.
