Culture Up Late opens the museum after hours with a few extras including VR experiences, short and sweet tours, hands-on workshops, live music and performances. Enjoy a mid-week diversion with a bit of a difference! It’s also the perfect opportunity to enjoy the latest exhibitions, during its quieter moments.

Brilliant women curate and perform Half the Sky's diverse, surprising offerings - savour bespoke tours, scientist spot talks, workshops, live music and more.

• Tall Tales and True

Have the last word as two “experts” give you differing interpretations of Australian Museum collection objects. Credible? Doubtful? Outrageous? You decide.

• Live Music: Liz Martin

Evocative and alluring, Liz Martin’s tender ballads, sophisticated pop and instrumentals sit in a sweet spot at the intersection of jazz, pop and folk, all tied together with her soaring voice and sensational musicianship.

• Let’s Make Love: Jen Jamieson

Create oxytocin—aka the ‘love hormone’—in an intimate one-on-one performance with Perth theatre-maker Jen Jamieson that is driven by adventure, touch and trust.

Let’s Make Love contains adult themes and requires a small amount of walking. Recommended for ages 16+. Tactile & Kinesthetic Tours available upon request.


• Scientific Illustration of Frogs with Riona Tindal

More than 230 species of frog have been discovered in Australia. Explore their many variations while sharpening your observation and drawing skills in skilled scientific illustrator Riona Tindal’s workshop.


• Frog Music

Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of Australia’s myriad frogs as composed by Alexis Weaver of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and get sonic in an interactive percussive frog chorus.

• Weaving Workshop and Yarning Circle with Aunty Karleen Green

Have a yarn while making your own creations using traditional Aboriginal weaving techniques.


• Virtual Reality: Chasing Coral

Coral bleaching is one of the most visible effects of climate change. See the changes to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef with your own eyes in this VR experience: immerse yourself in the underwater seascape of the Great Barrier Reef before it disappears.


• Touch Tables

Australian Museum’s knowledgeable volunteers open our collections to you in these intimate, personal and tactile interactions. Touch as much as you want, ask all the questions you can think of, learn something new!


• Spot Tours

Connect with our collection through the eyes of Australian Museum Staff. Go on an adventure through selected exhibits and experience the personal favourites and hidden stories in these short, informal tours.

• Adorned

Create your very own Indigenous-themed jewellery with natural materials.

• 3D Science and Technology

Get up close and personal with the scientists at the forefront of 3D scanning and printing technologies and how they are used by Museums for research, conservation and education.

• Magnificent Minerals with Mel Murray

How long does it take to form a diamond? Why are rubies red? What habits do crystals have and can they be broken? Discover the pedigree of perfection with Earth scientist Melissa Murray as she delves into the mysteries of magnificent minerals from The Albert Chapman collection - one of the world’s top 10 minerals collections.

• Mammoths: Giants of the Ice Age

Tickets include free access to the entire museum, including temporary exhibition Mammoths - Giant of the Ice Age.
