Event description

Description

Australia has welcomed and received most of us as migrants and refugees.

With our diversities, our religions, food, music, values, and cultures we have made this beautiful country our home.

A new country, with new laws and new culture/s co-existing.

Laws exist to protect citizens, to stop exploitation of people (children, women and men), however some laws might clash with some cultural practises (norms in the old country).

How do we as professionals work and deal with these issues?

Expert guest speakers will present important information on different cultural practices that might clash with Australian laws.

Small group discussions will be organized to present an opportunity to share strategies on how to raise awareness to communities and clients we work with.

Topics included are:

  • Underage/early Marriage
  • Marriage without consent
  • Modern Slavery
  • FGM
  • Verbal abuse and its effect on children
  • Self- harm practices

Speakers presenting are from:

  • University of Technology Sydney
  • Relationship Australian
  • Western Sydney Local Health District
  • Medical Doctor from Liverpool
  • The Freedom Partnership - to End Modern Slavery. The Salvation Army

Who should attend?

Anyone who works with CALD communities: Bilingual Community Educators/workers, Settlement workers, Multicultural Workers in Government and Non-Government organizations.
