Description

Please join University Collections at our Roseworthy Campus for a Cultural Conversation - Companion Animals with Professor Wayne Hein, Head of School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences and Dean of Roseworthy Campus and Dr Susan Hazel, Senior Lecturer for an exploration of human-animal bonds.

The state of the art School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at the University of Adelaide was established in 2008, to much excitement. University Collections has provided opportunities to inspect the School’s innovative facilities and surgery, and now, ten years on, we would like to share with you what happens inside.

Throughout history, people have held animals in great affection and often form strong emotional bonds: their pets are a beloved part of the family. It is now accepted that the human-animal bond also has great benefits. While the traditional narrative is about domestication and mutually beneficial co-existence between humans and animals, there is increased research on the emotional benefits for humans from the bond we share with animals. This includes the rehabilitation of service personnel suffering from PTSD, children affected with autism, and prisoners- through caring for animals people gain confidence, empathy and a sense of responsibility.

Why does this happen? Does the human-animal bond fill an emotional need that is not provided by relationships between humans? In this Conversation Professor Hein and Dr Hazel will illustrate through examples this new, holistic interpretation of our relationship with animals which is now increasingly reflected in the School’s curriculum. Courses educate new streams of veterinarians and animal scientists in the human-animal bond and its relationship to animal and human health.

Please join us for an informative and relaxing afternoon at the University’s beautiful Roseworthy Campus. Light refreshments will precede the event and people attending will have an opportunity to go on a tour of the School’s Companion Animal Health Centre after the Conversation.

A complimentary bus to the event is available. Please note there are limited seats available. Ensure you select “General Admission and Bus Seat” when making your reservation.
