Description

YouthSites: Urban youth arts, care and learning in the global city

My research examines how non-formal arts sectors contribute to young people’s well-being, as part of urban youth infrastructures in cities around the world. In our new book, Youth Sites: Histories of Creativity, Care and Learning in the City, my co-authors and I examine the emergence and consolidation of youth arts organizations as part of the structures of youth provision that make cities hospitable for young people. Our work draws on infrastructural analysis to examine youth arts sectors as aesthetic, social semiotic and material resources. We have developed a historical study of learning spaces for various youth communities in three global cities (London, Toronto, Vancouver), and in this talk, I will provide a structural overview of our analysis and take a closer look at how arts organisations negotiate the semiotics of authenticity and trust to aid youth transitions is challenging times.
