Event Details

Despite high-profile individuals like Chelsea Manning and Caitlyn Jenner pushing transgender people to the front pages, challenging society’s notions of man and woman, how does the media cross this line and fairly report on transgender issues? How do we move beyond questions of ‘he’ or ‘she’?

Join us for a lively discussion, and meet our panellists:

UWA academic Rob Cover: author of "Queer Youth Suicide, Culture and Identity: Unbelievable Lives?" in 2012, examining the pressure young people face to present their sexual identities in prescribed ways.

Former WA Labor Senator Louise Pratt:  only the second openly lesbian person elected to an Australian parliament. When her partner Aram became a transman, the couple were confronted by other people’s notions of sexuality and gender, and the limitations of language.

Tina Ross: who will talk about her transition to becoming legally female in 2014, including the positive experiences she has had with service providers and acceptance in her IT profession and social life.

BUT THERE’S MORE!   WANT A QUICK PRE-EVENT SESSION ON USING TWITTER?

Flip Prior, a proud founding committee member of WiM WA and now Twitter Australia's Partnerships Manager (News & Government), will offer a free "Getting to Know Twitter Better" session exclusively for those attending our Crossing the Line event.

The session will be held at a venue very close to The Dominion League from 5pm sharp, prior to our networking event and panel discussion. Because of the need to go elsewhere we've had to limit the number who can attend. So, if you want to take advantage of this exceptional opportunity, after you've purchased your Crossing the Line ticket, email  info@womeninmedia.com.au  with Yes to Twitter in the subject line, and we'll let you know whether you've made the cut.

A self-described social media addict, Flip’s job at Twitter is to inspire journalists, news organisations, politicians and government institutions to use Twitter in creative ways. She was formerly an award-winning journalist with The West Australian and communications manager for the Walkley Foundation for Journalism. Find and follow her on Twitter @FlipPrior.
