Description

ABOUT THIS SESSION:

Being able to recognise and apply well-argued positions is an essential aspect of any HDR project, regardless of your discipline.

This module will cover the core ideas of critical thinking, as applied to research, with a focus on three key tasks:

  1. identifying arguments,

  2. identifying common fallacies, and

  3. constructing argument outlines.

Using logic methodology, the program will focus on how to extract the arguments hidden within academic texts, how to identify common mistakes in reasoning and how academic text can be broken down into formal arguments. We'll also look at how this process can be reversed, using formal arguments to generate well-reasoned academic text.

WHY SHOULD I ATTEND?

The development of critical literacy is essential for high-quality research, but an understanding of what critical thinking is and how to apply it will give you an advantage across a range of professional and personal contexts.

RECOMMENDED FOR:

Graduate researchers at any stage of candidature. This session is not available to undergraduate students.
