Description

CrikeyCon VI Training - Hacking & Hardening Cloud Environments (½ Day)

Overview

With the adoption of Agile processes, DevOps practices and cloud technologies, businesses are achieving rapid delivery to market their digital products. But are security requirements considered or are they brushed aside in this fast-paced application delivery model? Are we able to keep up?

In this session, we will take a look at the standard designs and architectures established by DevOps teams to deliver these projects securely in the cloud.

We'll then let you loose in our own AWS environment to discover and exploit some of the common design oversights you may find on your own engagements.

Periodically we'll reveal parts of the environment, discuss the design and walk through potential attack vectors.

Once the environment is owned we'll switch to defense, analyse the threat model and work through the remediation steps necessary to harden these environments.

Student Prerequisites

None - Beginner to intermediate level

Software Requirements

Kali VM, or your favoured pentesting set up.

Hardware Requirements

A laptop capable of running the software requirements with wifi.

Trainer Biographies

Jay Nicholson & Michael Lindsay

We're a couple of engineers with over 20 years combined in various tech roles in banks, energy, government and telecoms, with the past 5 years working predominantly with cloud environments.

We enjoy building, breaking and repairing tech in the cloud and we're passionate about helping businesses improve their software development, architecture design and infrastructure build.

Along the journey we've encountered a number of projects exhibiting a lack of knowledge of, or failure to apply the controls necessary to secure their applications.

We're eager to give you a look under the covers of a typical cloud deployment for an enterprise application, discuss potential weaknesses and share ideas on maturing software development, infrastructure build and application deployment.
