CRIG October 2016 Forum - Research Advocacy & Partnerships

This forum will highlight new and developing practices for information professionals working with researchers. Showcasing new facilities, examples of embedded research skills with PhD’s and skill development we aim to provide some insights into some of the possible futures and direction of the field.

1.30-2.00 Data Savvy to Data Science - training pathways and pushing boundaries (20 minutes + 10 minutes questions)

Kathryn Unsworth – ANDS

As academic/research librarians, where will we find ourselves in the next little while? Where and how will we connect with our research communities? What services will we provide? What skills will we need to develop to enhance collaborations and partnerships with researchers? And what’s available now that can support our transition into existing and future research and research data-related roles? In this presentation, we can’t and won’t answer all of these questions, but we can do a little future forecasting and provide some best guesses particularly around skills requirements, and what those potential roles/collaborations/partnerships might look like. We will examine the emerging continuum of research support and research data-related training pathways by which librarians can up-skill, including a preview of what ANDS intends to offer in RD training for librarians post 23 RD Things. We may even have a little time to undertake a quick hands-on activity, so BYOD in readiness.

3.30-4.00 HDR in the Cloud: New PhD coursework unit @Deakin University (20 minutes + 10 minutes questions)

Josipa Crnic – Deakin University

Australian HE institutions are increasingly working to develop enhanced learning opportunities for their PhD students in order that they may experience better career outcomes in academia, industry and beyond (see http://olt.gov.au/project-reframing-phd-australiaaposs-future-universities-2015).

We are seeing the inclusion of compulsory research skills coursework components reminiscent of those that have long been a feature of doctoral training programs in US and European Universities.

In 2016 Deakin University Library was given the opportunity to contribute a module as part of the Faculty of Arts & Education’s online Research Training Unit.

This presentation will provide a background to that development and offer a reflection on the experience of embedding tailor-made content in a unique online environment.

Josipa Crnic

Deakin University

Josipa Crnic is the Scholarly Services Librarian. She works as part of the Library Research Services team, coordinating 3 Research Librarians and 2 Research Support Officers. They develop, deliver and evaluate targeted services and resources in areas such as:

Research metrics support; Determining research quality; Developing publishing strategies; Data management good practice; Developing and curating research profiles.

Eva Fisch

La Trobe University

Eva Fisch is the Manager of the Library Research Team at La Trobe University Library in Melbourne, Australia. She is responsible for the delivery of researcher services, systems and programs which contribute to improved research outcomes of individual researchers and increased impact and attention for the University as a whole.

These include research attention and metrics, open access and where to publish, research data management, the University “My Publications” system, its Repository, and the Greek Archives. The Research Team works with its University partners to provide La Trobe researchers with an integrated and responsive, end to end support system.

In 2016 the Team is launching a new immersive space for researchers, the Library Research Commons. The Research Commons will contain bookable collaborative spaces for researchers, with easy access to key tools, including a visualisation wall, creative studio, scanning equipment, workshop and meeting spaces and the expertise of Library Research Advisers.

Kathryn Unsworth

ANDS

Kathryn Unsworth is a Data Librarian with the Australian National Data Service (ANDS) based in Melbourne at Monash University’s Caulfield campus. Kathryn engages with a number of Australian universities, providing research data management related advice, support and training. Additionally, Kathryn works in partnership with institutions to deliver ANDS-funded projects. She has many RDM- related interests including, DMP implementations and their value in changing researcher behaviours and practices, IP and licensing issues for data, ethics and informed consent, and upskilling data librarians to transition into data science roles.
