Description

Creative Writing Masterclass: Bringing The World To Life

Presented by Dr Beth Yahp

Experience first-hand a masterclass in Creative Writing at the University of Sydney.

What brings a place to life in a reader’s mind? How do we translate real, remembered or imagined places into memorable sites a reader may step into? In this interactive workshop participants are introduced to strategies to start and sustain their writing practice: to cultivate a ‘radical attentiveness’ to the world and to language – its effects and possibilities. Come take an imaginary tour, do writing exercises to make things new and share in tips and tricks to bring the world to life on the page through reading and writing creatively.

Dr Beth Yahp has taught writing workshops for many years and currently lectures in the Creative Writing program at the University of Sydney. Her award-winning novel The Crocodile Fury was translated and published in several European languages, and she wrote the libretto for composer Liza Lim’s contemporary opera Moon Spirit Feasting, which won the APRA award for Best Classical Composition in 2002. Beth has edited or co-edited several collections of stories and essays, and her memoir Eat First, Talk Later was published by Penguin Random House in 2015. The Red Pearl and Other Stories, along with a new edition of The Crocodile Fury, is due from Vagabond Press in October 2017.
