This creative writing course is a highly practical writing course that is designed for those interested in the creative writing process. This creative writing course is aimed at stimulating your creativity and imagination, finding answers to your questions as a writer, including your authentic voice, structuring narrative and crafting a plot. This creative writing course will challenge you by asking why, what and who are you writing for as well as how to enhance your writing skills. Ideal for those who consider themselves beginners, this creative writing course aims to support you through to the next step and will facilitate a hands-on writing workshop. At the completion of this creative writing course you will gain new insights into your creative writing approach from the work you have written during classes.

At the completion of this creative writing course you will know how to:

  • Prose and fiction genres from the writers' and readers' perspectives.

Characterisation

  • Who do you want to write about?
  • Searching for characters.
  • Developing characters.
  • Conflict and contradictions.
  • The quality of exposition.

Settings

  • Where is it?
  • How settings relate to characters and plots.
  • Imagery.

Voice and Perspective

  • Who is the narrator?
  • Forms of narration.
  • Dealing with the first, second and third person standpoints.

Writing Dialogue

  • Who is communicating and why?
  • Text and subtext: show and tell

Writing Structure

  • How will you structure your story?
  • Beginnings, middle, endings.

Intended Audience

This creative writing course is aimed at those interested in developing their creative writing skills, from those who have published their first stories to those who have only written for themselves. This creative writing course requires no formal university or creative writing experience, although it is recommended that participants read broadly and have attempted some form of writing in the past.

Delivery Style

This creative writing course will be delivered as an interactive workshop where the instructor will provide principles to drive workshop activities. This skills approach adopted in this creative writing course allows participants to work through concepts introduced by the instructor for engaged learning.
