Cultural Mapping & Creative Cartographies
with Dr Marnie Badham & Guests
Wed 17 May || 6pm - 9pm
Cultural mapping is a method of inquiry and a methodological tool in social art making, urban planning, and community development that makes visible the ways local stories, practices, relationships, physical memories, and rituals constitute places as meaningful locations. Historically, maps have also served as tools of colonization, ownership and exclusion. Contemporary artists and cultural development workers use creative cartographies as tools for engagement, understanding relationships, and to draw attention to counter-narratives and the politics of land, place and history.
As an emerging interdisciplinary field, the potential applications for cultural mapping are wide open. In this intensive class, producers will examine a range of practices including;
- artist maps that intend to make sense of place or draw attention to particular local concerns;
- maps developed collaboratively to engage community in consultation and engagement; and
- maps that serve to document and show relationships between important histories and cultural assets.
A range of creative approaches and practical projects will be shared by various artists, producers and scholars who use cultural mapping in their work as both development tools and also public outcomes.
Key presenter Dr Marnie Badham has a long history of socially-engaged art and community planning in both Canada and Australia. Recently appointed as the Vice Chancellor's Post Doctoral Research Fellow, School of Art, RMIT University, Marnie previously convened of the Master of Arts and Community Practice at VCA, University of Melbourne.
