Creative Facilitation Masterclass - Design for Aliveness

In this masterclass you will learn how to use creative processes that allow people to really participate.
Creative Facilitation encourages movement, exploration, aliveness and connecting with ideas and each other. We’ll do all of that in this two-day Masterclass, as well as help you to explore, design, create, and prototype your own materials and activities.
These skills are invaluable in many situations - day-to-day work, when preparing a presentation or conference workshop, when inviting ideas from others, and when comparing options.
We have spent the last 20 years helping organisations around the world have meetings that command attention and generate challenge and excitement. There’s no big secret to what we do, it comes down to two things: using creative processes that allow people to really participate, and showing up as a facilitator that people feel able to trust.

Who is this Masterclass for?
Experienced facilitators understand that even knowing a lot of processes and methods is not enough. Sometimes, you have to create activities for a specific purpose. This masterclass is for people who work with groups and are frustrated by one-to-many processes such as presentations, talks, panels, Q & A, and facilitator-centric methods. You might be involved in facilitating workshops, or offering training, doing community engagement activities, teaching, lecturing, creating policy or working in a team.
What will the Masterclass cover?
On Day One (among other activities), we will unearth the patterns in different activities and materials, exploring what works and what doesn’t, and why. We’ll invite you to bring some of the artefacts you use in your workshops: cards, games, activities - and we’ll share some of our favourites, exploring why they are favourites, and what they contribute.
We have learned that it’s the process of looking at different patterns that is so useful for both our practice and new tools than any artefact we might come up with. We’ll share an exciting new tool that we have developed.
On Day Two you will develop your own materials and activities, test and improve them. Get the benefits of exploring prototypes with some of the most creative facilitators in Australia. You’ll take part in practical exercises that will boost your creativity when facilitating. You’ll learn how to access deeper creativity, develop new ideas ‘off-the-bat’ when working with others. In addition, you’ll improve your ability to relax and be in the moment.
About your hosts
Viv McWaters, Australia: I once wanted to be an astronomical photographer but settled for agricultural journalist, which caused quite a hoo-ha as women weren’t supposed to go to agricultural college. Rules weren’t going to stop me (I had the rules changed). Now there’s a clue about how I still approach life! I’ve worked as a journalist, and in communications, and community education, training and strategy development. Now I specialise in facilitation and draw on my background in the natural sciences and arts. Improvisation is a constant source of inspiration, as is nature, play and the surprising things that people say and do. I have worked in over 35 different countries, mainly in Asia and Africa, which has helped fuel my passion for bird watching and street art.
Lee Ryan, New Zealand: I was in a small hall by the seaside doing improv for the first time in a decade with 12 other people when I realized that where you really build your muscles for innovation is in improvisation. At the time I was leading an innovation practice across 33 countries for a multinational organization but so much of our training was grounded in a process. Now I work as a Design Coach with teams across New Zealand, Australia, Jakarta and China; teach business executives at our largest university and every now and then help to host industry conferences. I continue to be fascinated by the power of games, Lego and the quality of conversation accompanied by a NZ Pinot.

1. To find some tool development space. What creative facilitators need most is space and time free from distractions in order to evolve a new tool that meets their audience needs or move in a new direction. This would do it.
2. Because the Larwill is a brilliant space. It has art, outside spaces, a cafe and you can even stay at the hotel if you need additional time to block out.
3. For Focus. To get a block of input and development all in one go really helps you to focus your mind when you are at the end of the year. Imagine going into the new year with stuff to try.

These are people with whom you can share ideas and problems and who will (hopefully) give you constructive feedback to help you on your facilitation practice.

In this creative atmosphere fresh ideas will spring to the fore and you will be inspired to do things differently and/or do things differently.
6. Support. To have a people who will get to know you and suggest from a broad repertoire of domains/countries/conferences and be able to help with advice, support and encouragement.
7. Legitimacy. Going on a creative facilitation masterclass is prioritising the creative element of your facilitation. It is telling friends, family and most importantly yourself that your creativity matters.

GST of 10% is added to your registration fee and a tax invoice is provided with your registration.
Cost includes morning and afternoon teas, and lunch.
We understand that sometimes plans change. If you find you need to cancel, we'll be sorry and will reimburse your registration fee less a 20% handling charge. We can't accept cancellations after April 12, 2016. Substitutions are okay.
