First held in 2015, Create@Alibaba Cloud Startup Contest (CACSC) consists of a series of contests for global entrepreneurs in the technology field. It is sponsored by Alibaba Cloud Innovation Center (ACIC), in collaboration with media outlets, venture capital investors, and top-level partners worldwide.

We are pleased to invite you to participate at CACSC in partnership with the City of Melbourne, Startup Victoria and Trade Victoria to be held on August 23rd, 2018 in Melbourne. This year, top finalists of Melbourne will be invited for a city battle on September 14th 2018 that will be held in Shanghai, China where innovative startups from Shanghai, Boston and Melbourne will be chosen to compete. The 6 finalist teams selected from the Shanghai City Battle will be invited to pitch at the Global Final in November 2018 in Hangzhou, China.

How Does It Work?

  1. Registration. Registrations have now closed for the competition
  2. Event tickets: Reserve your event tickets via this Eventbrite page
  3. Shortlisting. Based on the briefs received, we will shortlist entrants for the first round of our contest
  4. First Round: Pitch against some of the best ANZ startups on the 23rd August, 2018 in Melbourne
  5. Second round: City battle contest in Shanghai takes place with the best finalists from Shanghai, Boston and Melbourne*. (Date: September 14th)
  6. Third round: Global final. The top 6 of the second round will be invited to the global final in China. The top three have a chance to pitch, the three runner ups will do a Q&A session with investors**. Location: Hangzhou. Date: November 15/16.

For each of round, entrants will pitch their business and be assessed by a judging panel consisting of VC’s, business leaders and Alibaba execs.

Eligibility criteria

Registration closes on August 7th for CACSC Melbourne 2018. A shortlist will be notified for pitch training with Startrup Victoria. Our ANZ final will take place on the 23rd August.

To qualify for CACSC, your startup must:

  • The company's country of registration is in Australia
  • Officially registered as a company for no more than 3 years
  • The company is on the stage before Series A financing
  • Have a clear business model
  • Annual turnover under AUD30 million

*Travel & Accommodation cost will be sponsored by Alibaba Cloud for 1 team member of each startup who qualifies for the Shanghai city battle.

Roy Hui - Founder of Market Engine


Roy Hui

Roy has built numerous ecommerce businesses in Australia and around the globe since 2006. Following his passion to connect global brands to Chinese consumers, he founded Market Engine, providing end to end ecommerce solutions to reach Chinese consumers. Market Engine currently works with more than 50 brands across Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Denmark and the UK. Roy spends most of this time with various businesses exploring the best growth strategy for China. Roy currently operates from Melbourne Australia and Hangzhou China

Rachel Bui - Founder of Aires


Rachel Bui

Rachel Bui is the founder of Aires, an artificial intelligence lab and the inaugural CEO and co-founder of the Australia-Vietnam Young Leadership Dialogue. Rachel was a founding team member at muru-D, where she helped to set up the startup accelerator and led muru-D China strategy. Previously, Rachel worked at the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance in Melbourne, Australia where she worked on the Gonski national education reform, taxi deregulation, public transport and Plan Melbourne. She holds a B.Com (Hons) from Monash University and also studied filmmaking at the Victorian College of the Arts. Rachel is interdisciplinary and enjoys merging art and science to uncover innovative and creative solutions that will have social and cultural impacts

Scott Ni - Senior Director, Strategy and Operations, Alibaba Group (Australia and New Zealand)

Scott Ni

A 17-year veteran with Alibaba Group, Scott Ni joined the company in April, 2000 and has held key leadership roles in sales, marketing and marketplace operations. He spearheaded the globalization of in India from 2008 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2014, he led the transformation of Taobao University, Alibaba’s flagship training and development platform. Prior to his current role in Alibaba Australia and New Zealand office, Scott had serviced in Alibaba Strategic Investment and led the integration of major M&As, including Lazada and Youku.

James Wang, Territory Manager, Alibaba Cloud

James Wang

James is the territory manager of southern region at Alibaba Cloud where he manages a team supporting customers on their cloud journey. His role covers clients across various sectors and he has delivered solutions utilising AI and machine learning as part of Alibaba Clouds Big Data platform and solutions.

James is responsible for making sure that customer investments in Digital Experience, Supply Chain and Commerce are fully utilised and takes advantage of the full Alibaba Group ecosystem which runs across ecommerce, cloud technology, logistics, payments and digital media.

Prior to joining Alibaba Cloud, James held business development roles at Oracle Marketing Cloud, helping Retail, Travel and Manufacturing sector organisations to drive revenue and engagement through insight, testing, optimsation and automation.

He is also a co-founder of iProperty Express, a successful cloud based mobile business helping managers across the property sector with inspections and condition reports.

Claire Ferres Miles

Claire FErres Miles

Claire joined the City of Melbourne in May 2018. Previously Claire has held executive roles in Local Government (City of Port Phillip), Victorian Government (Transport and Planning), Transport for London and in the private sector, and is highly regarded for her collaborative leadership, authentic community engagement and innovative partnerships. These partnerships have led to breakthroughs in government policy in affordable housing, sustainability, transport and planning - to design and deliver beautiful places for people that are inclusive, prosperous and healthy.

Claire is passionate about achieving public value, with demonstrated experience in developing high performing teams and service reform, with a strong commitment to leading a safe, equitable and fun workplace. In 2017 Claire was recognised as a ‘Top 50 Woman in the Victorian Public Sector’. She has a Master of Transport, a Master of Traffic, a Bachelor of Planning & Design with majors in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Our MC for the night is Dr Catherine Lou - Lecturer at the College of Business, VU

Dr Catherine Lou

Dr Catherine Lou is currently a lecturer in supply chain and logistics at the College of Business, and Project Manager at the Victoria Business Confucius Institute at Victoria University. Catherine received her Doctoral Degree in Supply Chain Optimisation from VU and Master in Applied Math from Beihang University in China. Catherine has a very strong background in Applied Mathematics and optimal value chain management. She has published articles in peer-reviewed international journals and has received competitive government & industry grants in the value chain related area.

Since 2015, Catherine initiated 'young leaders to China: entrepreneurship and innovation' program and has successfully led three groups of young Australian startups and entrepreneurs to Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou (China), with seven other countries joined in Beijing this year. Catherine also serves as Research Associate at the Institute for Sustainable Industries & Liveable Cities and the Victoria Institute of Strategic Economic Studies. Catherine was recognised as the 'International Postgraduate Student of the Year' by Victoria State Government in 2013 and outstanding VU alumni in 2015. She also received an entrepreneur award from Behind Closed Doors organisation and associated scholarship from the Australian Government Grant.

On top of her academic work, Catherine has been contributing to the broader community. She served as President at Victoria University Postgraduate Association, and as President of Southeastern branch at the Council of Australia Postgraduates Association, and National Executive Committee of the Council of International Students Australia in 2013. She currently sits in the Advisory board of Executive Wealth Circle.
