CRARC Logo

For anyone wanting to get into the Amateur Radio world, the CRARC Foundation Licence Course covers many of the core concepts required to get into Amateur Radio, and optionally provides Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) accredited assessment to get your licence.

What you’ll learn.

  • the basic practical technical skills to operate commercially manufactured radio equipment, with a focus on ensuring safe and non-interfering operation.

  • the required practical operating procedures to use your amateur radio licence on air and ensure efficient and legal use of the amateur radio spectrum, these fall within the amateur radio licence.

  • The basics of electricity, transmitters, receivers, feedlines, antennas, propagation and electromagnetic radiation.

No prior learning is assumed or required for this course.

Most of the Foundation Course learning follows closely with the Foundation Licence Manual, available as an optional extra as a part of this course. This does not need to be studied prior, but can be invaluable during and after the course as a reference.

All participants of the CRARC Foundation Licence Course may choose to do the WIA Assessment for their Foundation Licence. This will require that participants bring along a few extra items:

  • A recent passport sized photo of themselves.

  • Photo Identification

  • $75 Cash to pay for WIA Assessment ($40 for under 18s), includes assessor fee

  • $5 Cash to receive next available callsign upon successful assessment, or $20 to select your own callsign within the ACMA/WIA requirements available here (http://www.wia.org.au/licenses/licensing/guidetocallsigns/).

  • ACMA will issue an invoice for your licence which must be paid BEFORE using your licence. This is approximately $76.

Please note, the Foundation course is run by volunteers who generously give their time from the Canberra Region Amateur Radio Club, and will be cancelled/postponed if attendance does not gain a minimum of four participants.

The Course operates across both Saturday and Sunday, starting at 8:30am sharp and wrapping up around 5pm.
