Event description

Description

CPN special event - Accountants at Risk

We all know that accounting can be a risky profession with accountants being accused of acting negligently, breaching their duties and even ‘aiding and abetting’ in criminal activity, but it seems that now more than ever before, those risks have increased. This presentation will consider three areas of current interest:

  • The obligation of accountants to report to an ‘appropriate authority’ when there is credible evidence of serious harm to investors, creditors, employees or the general public.
  • The risk to the accountant in identifying whether a client is required to prepare and/or audit annual financial statements under the Corporations Act, and
  • The risk to an accountant for ‘knowingly being involved in contraventions of workplace law’ – we will consider the recent decision in the Federal Circuit Court, where an accountant was held liable for underpayments made by the client to its employees.
