We are proud pioneers of the original "10 points in one day" CPD programme for experienced migration practitioners. Our programme delivers a high-quality and advanced CPD experience that offers maximum points in the minimum time.

Our Presenters

The programme will be led and facilitated by our Accredited Immigration Law Specialists, Peter Papadopoulos and Kathryn Viegas. Peter and Kathryn have extensive experience conducting advanced CPD for migration agents and lawyers through their previous contributions to CPD run by Migration Practice Essentials (MPE), the Migration Institute of Australia (MIA), the Law Council of Australia, the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) and the Immigration Advice & Rights Centre (IARC). Peter and Kathryn are excited about sharing the latest developments in migration law and policy along with practical tips to get those more complex cases over the line.

Contents of the CPD Express course programme

Among other things, our Accredited Immigration Law Specialists Peter Papadopoulos and Kathryn Viegas will cover the following topics:

  • The new MLTSSL andSTSOL– understanding how these lists are developed and what role practitioners and clients can play in influencing which occupations are included; getting practice ready for 1 July changes to these lists

  • Skilling Australians Fund announced in the 9 May Budget – levy amounts; impact on 457/TSS and ENS/RSMS visa programmes; interaction with existing training benchmarks and the sponsor's obligation to provide training; the prospect of exemptions, variations and refunds

  • 457 visa changes – lawfulness of the new caveat system; dealing with caveat-affected applications lodged before 19 April 2017; drafting submissions to address the new caveat requirements; influencing the setting of caveat parameters; understanding how and when to withdraw and seek a refund; proposed 1 July changes including removal of theELSETexemption, strengthened training benchmarks, police clearances and mandatory skills assessments; integrity and monitoring changes scheduled for December; the TSS visa due in March 2018 – proposed requirements and how to assist sponsors with long-term workforce planning strategies; labour agreements

  • ENS / RSMS visa changes – changes to age and English language requirements and exemptions - what will be phased out and when; strategies to get cases through before the March 2018 changes take effect; the proposed March 2018 framework and the likely impact on pipeline applications

  • Skills assessments – priority processing; internal review; a reminder on PIC 4020

  • GSM visa changes – the role of the States and Territories under the new regime; impact on 485visaand 489 visa applicants; consequential effects on Australia's education sector and the student visa market; lowered age limit from 1 July

  • Proposed GSM pathway for NZ citizens on 1 July – invitations; staggered VAC; residence periods; proving taxable income and exemptions; health waivers and character issues

  • Citizenship changes – retrospective application on the post-20 April 2017 cohort - legal insights and practical tips; understanding the proposed changes and guidance on advising clients before the legislation and policy guidelines are known; insights into possible changes to the special residence criteria and partner/de facto discretion

  • Proposed Temporary Sponsored Parent visa in November 2017

  • Partner visa update – processing times; insights into DIBP's plans to deal with the current caseload; assessment of family visa sponsors; proposed introduction of the requirement for sponsorship approval before lodging a partner visa application

  • OMARA Review update – recent changes to the Code of Conduct; dual regulation of legal practitioners; changes to the CPD framework

  • Sustainable business development – re-thinking client selection; valuing eligibility assessments; distinguishing between advisory services and application processing; re-orienting marketing strategies; building key relationships

CPD Points

Migration agents: The morning workshop is worth 6 MARA CPD points and the afternoon workshop (which is a mandatory activity) is worth 4 MARA CPD points; a total of 10 MARA CPD points.

Legal practitioners: There are 6.5 hours worth of teaching time in this all-day course, completion of which will enable you to earn 6 CPD units. The course will also cover at least 1 hour in each of the four compulsory CPD fields (Substantive Law, Professional Skills, Practice Management and Business Skills, Ethics and Professional Responsibility).

Course inclusions

  • Arrival tea/coffee, morning tea, hot/cold buffet lunch, afternoon tea
  • Course Materials prepared by the presenters for use as reference tools in your everyday practice

Registration cancellation and transfer policy

Only written cancellations received at least 14 calendar days prior to the course commencement date will be eligible for a 50% refund.

Otherwise, if you have booked a place and are then unable to attend, we would welcome a substitute if we receive at least 72 hours prior to the course:

  • written notification from you of your substitute - name, email address, telephone number and MARN (if applicable); and

  • payment of an additional $100 transfer fee to cover our administrative costs - a separate invoice will be sent to cover this fee and it must be paid via BPAY or credit card (Visa, MasterCard and AMEX).
