What skills should educators be focussing on in an increasingly globalized and technology-driven world? Is more testing the answer? Yong Zhao, Associate Dean for Global Education and Professor of Educational Methodology, Policy and Leadership at the University of Oregon argues that an overemphasis on high-stakes testing is a flawed approach. School systems should instead be fostering in students the creativity, entrepreneurialism, motivations and social skills that they will require as the innovators of the future; skills that can’t necessarily be measured by tests. Zhao will explore the academic and non-academic qualities that are essential to long-term educational outcomes, what makes a world-class education, and share his vision for reframing education for the 21st century.
