Description

BIRRALEE BLOKES – WESTERN FRONT TO WESTERN SUBURBS

The Birralee Blokes! Now this is a young male vocal group with a difference. Come and hear this dynamic Brisbane ensemble of young men aged 13 –25, conducted by Paul Tolley OAM at the Kenmore Uniting Church Cool & Classic concert at 982 Moggill Road, at 2pm on Sunday, 28th October.

They are the current ABC Classic FM Choir of the Year and recently performed in the Poppies and Poems Concert of Commemoration sponsored by the State Government and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Since its inception in 2003 the ensemble has performed widely in South East Queensland and toured nationally and internationally.

The Birralee Blokes will incorporate moving songs of WW1 battlefields into their programme for the 3rd 2018 Cool & Classic concert. Some of the Birralee Blokes have already been with other Birralee Voices choirs on an Anzac tour earlier this year and some are about to leave on the third WW1 Centenary Commemoration tour this year. Young Andrew Hurman, Simon Garrett and James Hunt are all involved in these tours and want to honour their great-grandfathers, who fought on the Western Front a century ago.

The varied programme for the Kenmore Cool & Classic concert moves from the segment of WW1 songs to negro spirituals, folk songs from Scotland and the USA, music from Sondheim and Australian compositions.

Conductor of the Choir of Hard Knocks, Dr Jonathon Welch AM, says “The Birralee Blokes have done for male singing what ‘Billy Elliot’ did for male dancing.” This is a great chance to hear a really different kind of male choir with a wide repertoire who just love to sing.

As always, there is a chance to talk to these vibrant young musicians over a delicious afternoon tea. Ring Rosemary 3378 4436 for more details. Tickets now available at the Refreshed Shop at the church at 982 Moggill Rd, online at www.kenmoreuca.org.au or at the door.
