Contours: In Conversation evenings
Contours presents 'In Conversation evenings', taking place over three nights in October with three special guests. Join arts curator and researcher Helen Stuckey, illustrator and artist Marigold Bartlett, and independent videogame designer and developer Nico Disseldorp, as they share ideas, insights, stories and experiences that are rooted within and have influenced Australian videogames history and culture.
Helen Stuckey is an arts curator, historian and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Flinders University working on Australia’s early game history. Her current curatorial practice is focused the cultural significance of videogames and their collection and exhibition within the gallery. At the Australian Centre for the Moving Image she initiated, produced and curated the Games Lab (2005 – 2009), a dedicated exhibition space for exploring videogame culture.
She was the Director of RMIT University’s Games Program in the School of Media and Communication (2009-2011). She recently completed her PhD on how museums can work with online knowledge communities on the preservation and exhibition of videogames as part of the ARC Linkage Project - Play It Again: Creating a Playable History of Australasian Digital Games, for Industry, Community and Research Purposes.
Marigold Bartlett is an illustrator and artist. She works in paint, pencil, digital media and videogames. She was art director on Movement Study 1, a short adventure game which was awarded Best Visual Art at the Freeplay Awards 2015. Her illustration and game art has been warmly reviewed in Paste Magazine, as well as on Kotaku, TheAuReview and IGN, and she has made several contributions to the international graphic novel collaboration Bartkira.
More recently she has worked on a number of fringe indie games, has begun teaching at RMIT and has been appointed Art Director of Film Victoria funded game, Wayward Strand.
Nico Disseldorp is a game designer and developer. He is part of Melbourne videogame company House House, the creators of the cooperative wrestling game Push Me Pull You. Push Me Pull You won the 2015 Freeplay Award, and received an honorable mention for the 2015 IGF Nuovo Award. In 2016 it was released for PlayStation 4 and computers.
As a solo developer, Nico creates web toys exploring geometry. Existing somewhere between games and tools, his work provides playful interfaces for mathematical ideas. The compass and straightedge construction game Let's Play: Ancient Greek Geometry has been used in maths classes throughout the world, and was selected as one of freeindiegam.es top puzzle games of 2013. In 2016, Nico created the recursive building tool Castles Made of Castles for the Now Play This festival in London.
Nico also designs non-digital games and is creating a collection of party games based around collaborative drawing. In 2015 he ran Shh, a workshop about silent creation and play. Nico is currently employed at RMIT, teaching programming for game students. He is working with the rest of House House on an unnamed future project.
Contours is curated by Chad Toprak with creative co-producers Pritika Sachdev and Ben Turner, and is in partnership with the City of Melbourne and the Melbourne Library Service.
