About this Event

Join Professor Jean du Plessis from the Deakin Law School and Professor Michael Adams, Head, University of New England Law School, for a lunchtime seminar on recent legal developments in the area of corporate governance. The impact of technology on corporate governance and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) will be discussed, specifically with reference to contemporary challenges associated with information governance and the impact of social media to challenge CSR statements. Can directors and managers be held liable for incorrect or misleading information regarding CSR? Another focus of the seminar will what should nowadays be understood under “the purpose of for-profit corporations”. The very important legal duty of directors “to act in the best interest of the corporation” will also be revisited.

Speakers

Professor Michael Adams

Professor Michael Adams is an internationally recognised specialist in corporate law, governance, securities markets regulation, and legal education (especially e-learning). Michael has been writing, teaching and regularly presenting on all these topics for over 20 years. He is a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators (FACE), as well as the Australian Academy of Law (FAAL), and is also a Fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia (FGIA & UK FCIS). Professor Adams has been the former President of the Australasian Law Teachers Association, the Corporate Law Teachers Association and Chartered Secretaries Australia (now Governance Institute of Australia). He is the co-author of ten books and 30 chapters, 50 articles and over 250 conference/seminar presentations. In 2000 he was the recipient of the Australian University Teacher of the Year, for Law and Legal Studies, as well as 2005 CSA President's Award.

Professor Jean du Plessis

Jean Du Plessis is currently a Professor of Law in Deakin Law School. Jean studied in South Africa and obtained his Doctorate in Law (LLD) in 1991. He served a 3-year term as Head of the Deakin Law School from 2000 to 2002 and was the President of the Corporate Law Teachers Association (CLTA) in 2007 and 2008. In December 2014, Jean was appointed to the Deakin University Council for a 3-year period until 31 December 2017. Jean became a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD) in November 2011. He is currently teaching the units Corporate Governance, Corporate Law and Corporations Law at Deakin University.
