Description

The Contemplary - Institute for Contemplative Practice

The Contemplary is a not-for-profit organisation. We are here to be of benefit to the community by offering instruction in a range of contemplative practices that enable people to flourish. Our mission is to open up a space: a physical space in our community in which we can practice together, and through this practice, open up a space inside ourselves so we are better equipped to navigate the swirling, churning compulsiveness of modern life.

We gather to allow the sediment to settle so our mind becomes a little clearer, more open. We hope that together we can form a community with which we can engage with life in a saner and more balanced way. This is a space to reconnect with something essential, something we each have at our core, a wellspring from which we can draw wisdom and virtue.

We are pleased to announce that The Contemplary is now offering fortnightly practice evenings open to anyone interested in being part of a community of meditation practice. This experience of structured group practice is intended to support and compliment your individual practice. These meetings will be comprised of a couple of guided practice sessions followed by discussion of practice related issues and challenges.

Our doors are open to everyone. We hope for this to be an opportunity for people who have participated in one of our retreats, courses or workshops and would like to connect with an ongoing supportive group practice. Our focus will be primarily on mindfulness of breathing meditation practices that seek to cultivate deepening levels of stability of attention. This particular style of meditation is also known as 'shamatha' or 'calm-abiding'. Our teachers will skilfully support this practice with a motivation and dedication of loving-kindness (metta).

The level of guidance will vary with each gathering depending on the group. Where possible there will be a preference for silence or self-guided practice. However, if you are new to the group or new to the practice please make yourself known to our teachers and they will happily accomodate you. There will be time afterwards for discussion or questions to clarify any challenges that may arise.

We have chairs and meditation cushions for seated meditation and plenty of blankets but feel free to bring a yoga mat or any props you may require. Finally please wear warm and comfortable loose-fitting clothing.
