Description

Contact Officer Training and Refresher

Contact Officers are staff who receive special training so that they can provide other staff with confidential information and support to resolve discrimination, harassment or bullying in the workplace. Being given this information and support, they can then allow people to determine how they can best resolve their problem – either by tackling it themselves, making use of the workplace complaint procedure, or by some other means.

What is covered:

The first half of the workshop covers the current relevant legislative frameworks and definitions, and the second half focuses on the role of Contact Officer and the internal complaint process in greater depth.

· Understanding the relevant law

· What’s considered to be harassment, sexual harassment, discrimination and bullying?

· What is not bullying? ie. the rights of managers to deal with performance issues

· Role of Contact Officer

· Necessary communication skills

· Note taking, confidentiality & privacy issues

· The internal complaint process-as it relates to harassment & bullying

· Skill building and exercises

Training Outcomes:

The focus in this workshop is to give the participants the confidence to perform the duties while reinforcing the boundaries of the role. It emphasises practical skill building and reinforces the importance of natural justice being applied throughout the internal resolution process. The more confident and understanding Contact Officers are about their roles, the more chance that issues will be dealt with at the earliest stages. Complaints are less likely to be escalated or to end up in external jurisdictions.
