Event description

Description

Integrating the principles of Consumer Control and Choice into organisational service design and delivery

The Western Melbourne Cross-Sector Community of Practice (the CoP) is a network of health, community, aged care and disability service providers and advocates, delivering supports to participants, clients, patients, carers and other family members who live within the western Melbourne metropolitan areas. The purpose of the CoP is to bring together different sectors to collaboratively identify and respond to the emerging challenges and opportunities of the NDIS, Aged Care and Mental Health reforms, and exchange good practice to achieve better consumer-directed-care outcomes.

Giving people with lived experience (and their families and carers) a voice in what and how they receive services is essential in developing services and practices that truly meet the needs of the community. Developed and delivered in collaboration by Mental Health Victoria and the Australian Federation of Disability Organisations, our latest workshop aims to better understand the principles of consumer control and choice and how to implement these in practice. The workshop is based on information gathered from consultations with consumers, carers and peak bodies from across the ageing, disability and mental health sectors, as well as international research.

Through this session, managers and senior workers of service providers will:

  • Better understand the key principles of consumer control and choice: what it is, and what it isn’t
  • Understand the rationale behind why these principles are important
  • Understand how to incorporate and embed these principles into the structure and values of an organisation
  • Take back practical and immediate actions to their workplace
  • Have the opportunity to share and learn from others across the ageing, disability and mental health sectors
