Visualising Learner Engagement: Creative Animations in the Teaching International Students (TIS) Project

Presented by A/Prof Kim Snepvangers & A/Prof Arianne Rourke, Scientia Education Fellows and Education Focussed Academics, Faculty of Art & Design

Working alongside ‘Students as Partners’, academics at Art & Design have connected with digital media students through professional experience to enhance career transition. Nested within the Teaching International Student (TIS) initiative, International and domestic student experiences alongside personal artmaking styles are valued in the creation of storyboards and digital animations.

We discuss how this collaborative model developed into an ecology where ‘shifts in practice’ are evidenced by students moving from arts focused outcomes to producing ‘Visual Learning Artefacts’ that act as catalysts for conversation in the teaching and learning environment. Visualising difficult issues such as groupwork, inclusion, procrastination, presentation anxiety and the first lecture reimagines how educators see, discuss and enhance learner engagement in their teaching. Underpinned by Kruger’s iceberg theoretical model a range of student narrative animations will be discussed in conversation with the students who created them. Making themes visible ‘below the waterline’ takes a more holistic view of exploring teaching with International students

Dr Arianne Rourke is an Associate Professor at UNSW Faculty of Art & Design.

Arianne is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), she teaches design history courses to design, art and media arts students. Her research is in higher education pedagogy, specifically focusing on investigating methods for improving the use of visuals in instructional design to assist in promoting the long-term retention of learning. Her role as a Scientia Education Fellow provides further opportunity to build on established Communities of Practice with academics interested in showcasing teaching case studies, which highlight innovative uses of visuals to promote student learning. Dr Kim Snepvangers is an Associate Professor at UNSW Faculty of Art & Design.

Kim is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), and an award-winning educational leader in Work Integrated Learning (WIL) and professional practice in creative ecologies, working within the UNSW Scientia Education Model. Kim has co-edited 3 books, over 20 book chapters and journal publications that have been recognised and shared in the wider professional context nationally and internationally. She promotes a scholarly approach to all aspects of teaching, course design and mentoring activities. Read more...
