Event description

Description

Wakefield Sports Clinic, in association with Netball SA, present on the implications and methods for prevention of concussion and ACL injuries in sport, whilst promoting awareness of the importance of a safe return to sport.

The session will equip attendees with a better understanding of both concussion and ACL injuries, as well as how to recognise symptoms, and when to refer for treatment.

Concussion

A Wakefield Sports Clinic Sports Doctor will be presenting on concussion in sport and safe return to play.

A Concussion is often a dramatic and alarming injury that presents suddenly and usually resolves quickly. However, it can occasionally have longer lasting effects including reduced concentration, prolonged headaches, dizziness as well as behavioural and emotional consequences.

Concussion is very common and can occur in children and adolescents as well as adults. It is estimated that 80% of concussion remains undiagnosed. Reasons for this poor diagnosis rate include lack of concussion awareness and education (from player, coach and parents), poor reporting of symptoms (either intentional or otherwise) and downplaying of symptoms by children and parents.

From this session you will gain a better understanding of concussion, how to recognise symptoms and when to refer.

ACL injury prevention

This session will be presented by a Wakefield Sports Clinic Physiotherapist who is a Netball Australia endorsed provider.

Knees and ankles are the most commonly injured body parts of netballers and most of these injuries occur when landing. In particular, injury to one of the major stabilisers of the knee, the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), is a common problem, representing roughly 25% of serious injuries annually.

Knowing all too well the devastation created by serious knee injuries, Netball Australia’s KNEE Program is designed to prevent them occurring. Whether you are a coach to your child’s netball team, high performance coach, support staff or parent, this program is designed to keep your players on the court for longer and moving more efficiently when there. As an athlete, this program aims to keep you playing the sport you love without being sidelined by injury.
